The history and popularity of Spider Solitaire

Spider Solitaire was first introduced in 1949 by F. R. Simon, a British author and game inventor. He called it "Spider" because of the eight legs of a spider, which correspond to the eight foundation piles that need to be filled. The game became widely popular in the 1990s, when it was included in Microsoft Windows as one of the default games. Since then, millions of people have played Spider Solitaire on their computers, phones, tablets, and online platforms.

The rules and variations of Spider Solitaire

The basic rules of Spider Solitaire are as follows:

  • The game is played with two standard 52-card decks, shuffled together.

  • The tableau consists of 10 columns, with 54 cards dealt face down in the first four columns and 50 cards dealt face down in the remaining six columns. The top card of each column is turned face up.

  • The foundation consists of eight empty piles.

  • The stock contains the remaining 50 cards that are not dealt to the tableau.

  • You can move one or more cards from one column to another, as long as they are in descending order and in the same suit. For example, you can move a 9 of spades onto a 10 of spades, or a sequence of 7-6-5-4-3 of hearts onto an 8 of hearts.

  • You can also move a complete sequence of cards from one column to another, regardless of the suit. For example, you can move a sequence of K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-A from one column to another empty column.

  • You can deal a new row of cards from the stock to the tableau when you run out of moves. You can only do this if there are no empty columns in the tableau.

  • You can move any card or sequence of cards to an empty column.

  • You can move a complete sequence of 13 cards in the same suit from the tableau to one of the foundation piles. This will remove that suit from play.

  • The game is won when you have moved all 104 cards to the foundation piles.

There are also some variations of Spider Solitaire that you can try, such as:

  • Spiderette: A smaller version of Spider Solitaire that uses only one deck of cards and seven columns.

  • Scorpion: A variation of Spider Solitaire that does not allow any moves that break a sequence of cards in the same suit.

  • Wasp: A variation of Scorpion that allows any card to be moved to an empty column.

  • Spider 2-Suit: A variation of Spider Solitaire that uses only two suits (spades and hearts) instead of four.

  • Spider 1-Suit: A variation of Spider Solitaire that uses only one suit (spades) instead of four.
